Week 1 Update

It has been a very busy Week 1 of Term, with all of our students (and staff) returning to the routine of school., As I said early in the week, it is great to see all of ours students back, active and engaged in the learning.

Bee Incursion

This week all students were lucky to participate in an in school incursion with Roy from the Sticky Bee Haven, Roy explained to the students the essential role that bees play in our environment through pollination and how we can support the ongoing bee population. Make sure you talk to your child about the importance role that bees play and how you can attract and support both honey and native bees around your home garden. As a school we will be now following up on this learning through in class STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) projects. Each year level has know been assigned a specific bee related problem or issue to solve. This is very exciting, as students are participating in providing solutions to real life problems through STEM. In Term 3 all parents will be invited to our STEM showcase to see how, as a school we have progressed. Around the school or in your child’s classroom you will also notice lots of bee related activities, by integrating the learning into different learning areas such as art, literacy and numeracy, we are ensuring that the students knowledge and understanding is consolidated. Thanks Mrs Mitchell for providing your students amazing water colour bees art work, they look amazing.

Inter school Sports

Next Friday we will be starting our inter school sports competition, where students will participate in soccer, netball and football games against other local schools. Our first game, next Friday 30 April we will be playing games against Nollamara Primary School. The games will be here at Dianella, with games starting at 1.30 pm. Parents are invited to come along and support their children.

ANZAC Day

As you will be aware, this weekend we will be commemorating ANZAC day on Sunday 25 April. ANZAC day is an opportunity for Australians from all backgrounds to commemorate and pay tribute to all of those men and women who have fought and died in wars. As a school, together with Dianella Secondary College and Dianella Secondary College Education Support Centre, we will be holding our own ANZAC ceremony on Tuesday 27 April from 10 am . Parents are welcome to attend the ceremony that will be held on the Secondary College quadrangle. Reminder that due to ANZAC day falling on Sunday, Monday is a public holiday and students do not attend school. Lest We Forget

Ramadan

At the moment our Islamic families are participating in Ramadan. Ramadan is the holy month of the Islamic calendar, where followers of Islam fast between dawn and sunset, worship and then celebrate after with Eid-al-Fitr, the breaking of the fast. From all of the staff and students at Dianella Primary College, Ramadan Mubarak.

Parents and Citizens Committee

This week our Parents and Citizens committee held their annual general meeting and elected a new executive committee. On behalf of the school I would like to thank the following parents for putting their hand up to help support the school.

Our new executive committee is:

President: Melissa Ozich

Vice President: Maxine Potgieter

Treasurer: Rose Hsieh Assistant Treasurer: Shelley Suet Ley Ng

Secretary: Sana Khan Assistant Secretary: Sasha Perrine

Executive Committee: Alex Ann Hughes, Siew Lian Ong, Maryann Henwood

The first P&C meeting for our new committee will be held this coming Wednesday, 28 April at 1.30 PM in The Staffroom. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

One of the main community activities for the P&C will be our upcoming Multicultural Harmony Lunch, which will be held at the end of Term 2. For the activity to be successful, the P&C will be looking for a class liaison parent to help with the coordination of the event. The role of the parent will be to help support the P&C with the event, coordinating your child’s classes family participation. If you would be interested in supporting the multicultural lunch, please speak to either myself or one of the P& C members. This was a great family event last year and we are looking forward to the event being even bigger and better this year.
