Week 6 Update

During Week 6 Dianella Primary College staff, students and several parents participated in various Reconciliation Week Activities over the past week. Although we have just entered the Noongar Season of Makuru, thankfully the rain stayed away and we were able to complete our activities in some warmth.

Dianella Education Precinct Reconciliation Walk

On Wednesday, all of our students and teachers joined with students from the Education Support Centre and the Secondary School  to walk the perimeters of our schools to show our support for and acknowledge the need for reconciliation. After listening to our AQIEO, Chantelle talk about the need for reconciliation and the significant events that led to Reconciliation Week being held every year from May 27 - June 3, the students headed off on our walk around the school. It was quite impressive to see well over 1000 students, staff and parents snaking their way around the school. I was also pleased to note that our youngest students, Pre Primary and Kindy, completed the walk with no complaints, well done!

Did you know that Reconciliation Week is held every year on these dates to commemorate the 27 May 1967 Referendum, which saw more than 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the Census? The week also commemorates the 3 June as day the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, the culmination of Eddie Koiki Mabo’s challenge to the legal fiction of ‘terra nullius’ (land belonging to no one) and leading to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands. This decision paved the way for Native Title.

Reconciliation Assembly

After the Reconciliation walk, we then held a special assembly that was hosted by some of our senior Indigenous students. With the help of Chantelle, the students did a great job of helping to commemorate the week and to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander culture. Well done students! Congratulations to our students who were recognised with honour certificates at the assembly. See full list of students below.

WA Reconciliation Walk - Kaarda Kumba (Kings Park)

On Friday our students leaders, joined with students from the Education Support Centre and then participated in the WA Reconciliation Walk at Kaarta Komba (Kings Park) – a highly significant place to the Whadjuk Noongar people. This land lies at the heart of Culture, with its location a key junction of the river and a chain of lakes, all of which are linked by songlines and continuing cultural practices. The walk included live music, storytelling, painting and many opportunities for learning along the way. It was great opportunity for our our senior students to join the wider community in Commemorating Reconciliation Week. Our students were very pleased to run into Mr Boundry on the walk.

School Disco

Have you got your party outfit all sorted? Our Year 6 students will be holding a disco to on Thursday 16 of June to help raise money for their school camp. As our school hall is no longer available, we will be holding the disco in the undercover area, with this years theme being Party Theme - students are encouraged to wear their favourite party outfit. There will be one session for all students, with the disco running from 5-6.30pm. Tickets are $5 each and are on sale every morning in front of the staffroom. Parents are welcome to stay if they would like to join in the fun.
