Teaching and Learning

The Intensive English Centre provides programs that are informed by The Western Australian Department of Education curriculum documents and the EAL/D Progress Map. IEC teachers explicitly teach the language of all subject areas through age-appropriate content. This approach enables students to develop their English vocabulary while engaging with both familiar and new concepts across the curriculum.

We recognise the diverse needs of our students, including those from English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) backgrounds. By utilising the EAL/D Progress Map and maintaining a strong focus on vocabulary development, we support students’ language growth and their engagement with a wide range of texts and hands on experiences.

Our literacy block includes daily literacy reviews, UFLI Phonics, Heggerty, The Syntax Project, Peggy Leggo, paired partner fluency, and knowledge units. These components work together to support the development of strong reading, writing, and language skills.

Our Mathematics program, Oxford Maths, is also aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum. It focuses on developing students’ understanding of mathematical concepts, strengthening problem-solving skills, and building fluency.

Educators

Our staff have a strong understanding of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) and the cultural and linguistic diversity of their students. They are responsive to students’ academic, social, and emotional strengths and needs.

IEC staff are further supported by Ethnic Education Assistants (EEA), curriculum specialist teachers, an on-site school psychologist, the school leadership team, and administrative staff in the school office.
